Community health centers excel at providing comprehensive primary and preventive care and chronic disease management in accessible, lower cost community settings. Staffed by caregivers who speak the languages and understand the cultures of their communities, health center effectiveness is reflected in improved health outcomes for patients, including a significant reduction in infant mortality and low birth weight babies, and an increase in patient self-management of chronic diseases such as diabetes and asthma. Community health centers are playing an important role in the implementation of Massachusetts’ historic health reform law. As the state’s 52 community health centers work to enroll residents into the Commonwealth’s new low-cost health plans, they are offering the newly-insured something equally critical: a health care home – a place where they can access a team of caregivers who come to know them and their health care needs. Primary Care Physician Loan Repayment Program for New Physicians The Massachusetts Community Health Center Primary Care Physician Loan Repayment Program is managed by the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers and is funded by donations from Bank of America, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Partners HealthCare System, Inc. and other corporate institutions. The program is intended to increase the capacity of health centers to provide primary care by enhancing the availability of primary care physicians. It is anticipated that with the ease in education debt, more physicians will choose primary care practice and commit to working at community health centers to provide critical health care services to medically underserved and uninsured residents. This program is open to primary care physicians who have completed their training and are not currently working at a community health center in Massachusetts but have a hire date within one year of the application date, medical students, interns and residents still in training who have outstanding educational debt and are willing to commit to working full time in an eligible Massachusetts community health center for at least two years. Primary Care Physicians hired at a community health center between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007 will have until June 1, 2008 to submit their application for consideration in this program. Application forms are available to download as either a Word or PDF file.
